THE MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT

The MFL Department at Dunraven consists of seven teachers. French and Spanish are taught at Year 7 through to A level. All students study at least one language at KS3 and a large number of students continue to GCSE. A healthy number continue with French or Spanish in the Sixth Form, with some choosing to continue their language study at undergraduate level.

The department is keen to ensure equal access to the curriculum for all and to develop the range of extra-curricular activities on offer. We have recently organised a Year 7 European Day of Languages Fiesta, foreign language cinema visits, GCSE Breakfast Clubs, extracurricular language and intervention clubs and have previously organised KS5 trips to Paris, Barcelona and Brittany.

The department’s current priorities involve engaging learners in the spontaneous use of the target language and to use scaffolding to ensure that the needs of all learners are met; we have a well-established seating and speaking routine to facilitate speaking and our lessons are taught almost entirely in target language. We have also worked to develop and refine our Curriculum Maps and Schemes of Work which are continuously under review so as to ensure that they prepare students for their transition to the next key stage as thoroughly (and enjoyably) as possible. The MFL department has a strong and coherent curriculum intent which is well understood by all members of the department; it has strong pedagogy and implementation strategies which allow students to make good progress across all key stages and students speak enthusiastically and highly about their MFL learning experience across all key stages.

All teachers are members of both a Departmental Team and a Year Team, either as a tutor or co-tutor. All staff are encouraged to play a full part in the life of the school in addition to the core tasks of preparation, teaching, marking and assessing progress.

Dunraven is keen to support all aspects of staff development, personal and professional, and has a strong staff development policy. It has had Investors in People status for many years. We have a very good track record of developing staff to move into leadership positions.

Candidates must be able to teach Spanish up to KS5, and their second language up to KS3. Please specify the level of each language taught on your application form.
