Newton Abbot College

September 2023

Ivy Education Trust is seeking an outstanding individual with drive, passion, enthusiasm and ambition to lead our Music & Performing Arts department in the next stage of its development. This is an opportunity for an inspirational leader who has strong subject knowledge of all the Arts disciplines and who is an outstanding and experienced classroom practitioner across KS3 to KS5 to take our department and student outcomes to the next level.

You will have excellent organisational, planning and communication skills and have high expectations of all students to secure the best outcomes. You believe that all students are capable of success and recognise that success comes in different forms. Driving forward strategic priorities you will ensure there is a robust curriculum and assessment framework in place underpinned by a key focus on developing, promoting and championing the Arts across the college.

As a leader you are inspirational, forward thinking and put students at the heart of everything you do. You are creative, dynamic, empathetic and have a natural ability to lead and empower both students and staff. You hold the highest expectations of yourself, your staff and your students and recognise the importance of the curriculum both inside and outside the classroom, and are innovative in your commitment to both, ensuring that the Arts are always high profile within the college.

Performing Arts plays a critical role in the whole college curriculum and wider opportunities at Newton Abbot College. The department prides itself in creating an environment where students' passion and drive for the Arts are fostered through engaging and challenging lessons, but also the opportunities for students to perform and develop their skills. This exciting and demanding role requires an individual who has outstanding practical skills in all three disciplines of dancing, singing and acting alongside exceptional subject knowledge. The subject teaches dance to years 7 and 8, within the Performing Arts & Music rotation, and teaches both GCSE and Level 3 BTEC Extended Certificate in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre and Dance Pathway).

The extra-curricular opportunities that we provide for our students play a vital role in the success of both the students taking the subjects and the wider college arts community. Our annual Performing Arts showcase, ‘The Works’ brings together all ages to present outstanding quality performances that are developed in lessons and through the numerous extra-curricular clubs on offer. The Music team currently run a concert every term; a Christmas concert, a spring concert and an open-air summer BBQ. As well as this, the highlight of the year sees the annual production, produced by the Performing Arts, Music and Art department teams, which has grown from strength to strength, demonstrating the highest calibre of professionalism, talent and above all, student enjoyment.
