DIRECTOR OF LEARNING – YEAR (TLR1A + ILPS)

JOB DESCRIPTION

General

To ensure individualised support, guidance and challenge to enable each student to achieve their potential (monitoring welfare, tracking progress and attendance and meeting with families as necessary).

  • To lead a team of tutors in the support of students in the year group.
  • To promote the year group throughout the school with students, staff, governors, parents and the community including through leading assemblies.
  • To support and develop the Associate Director of Learning Year (DOLY) attached to the Year group.

Teaching, Learning and Leadership

  • To be a very effective practitioner with the potential to be outstanding.
  • To promote good practice in the classroom, focusing on the further development of effective teaching strategies.
  • To chair Year meetings and organise professional development as appropriate.
  • To monitor and support staff performance, through lesson observation and performance management reviews.
  • To be responsible for the maintenance of tutor rooms, ordering and organisation of Year resources.
  • To support and develop cross-curricular links and partnerships as required.
  • To support the system of internal assessment including implementing strategies for developing student self-assessment.
  • To attend meetings as appropriate (eg Line Management, DOLY, EWO).

Student Support

  • To ensure that standards of work and discipline enable all students to work to the best of their ability.
  • To support additional activities that encourage student interest, motivation and success.
  • To organise and support Year Council Meetings / Parent Meetings.
  • To track student performance and behaviour and implement monitoring strategies as required (including PSP).
  • To provide classroom support to staff.
  • To meet the needs of all students including extending more able students and supporting the least able effectively.
  • To implement whole school policies/strategies including literacy, numeracy, Equality of Opportunity and the Every Child Matters agenda.

Selection Criteria

Candidates will be expected to have the following skills and knowledge:

  • Experience of effectively supporting and maintaining student progress and well being.
  • A thorough knowledge of their subject area, particularly in relation to the National Curriculum, GCSE, and 16-19 developments.
  • Skills and strategies for the leadership, supervision and support of staff and students.
  • Knowledge and understanding of team leadership, management, administration and planning.
  • The appropriate academic and management skills required to be an efficient and effective teacher.
  • The ability to plan, organise, assess, monitor and evaluate effectively, and to maintain a stimulating learning environment.
  • Effective interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Skills in the use of ICT, particularly in relation to Modern Languages Programmes.
  • The ability to devise strategies for implementing policies leading to equality of opportunity.
  • An understanding of and commitment to whole-school issues in a co-educational school and the willingness to be involved in all aspects of the work of the department and to contribute to the wider life of the school.
  • An understanding of and commitment to the Every Child Matters agenda.
